BRENT PENNINGTON Promotional photos for The New Vintage Ensemble's 2016 production of Shakespear's "Hamlet," featuring Conor O'Brien as Hamlet. Photographed at the Little Brick Theater in Scranton, PA, on the afternoon of 07 November 2015.

This is an outtake from the “Hamlet” shoot [link]; Conor changed position just enough that his head no longer hid the flash serving as the backlight, so when it went off I got a frame filled with raw photons and lens flare.  When making my selection passes, however, I kept it – it had potential.  While the rest of the set got a dramatic black & white treatment, I kept this one in color and actually boosted the saturation a bit with a film emulation and some Photoshop work.

It is a complete departure from the rest of the shoot, but as a stand-alone image I really like it.  It’s much more glamour-shot than moody-theater-shot, but shooting into exposed flashes is an idea that’s been kicking around the back of my mind for a couple of years now, so this was a happy accident that turned into a kind of proof of concept.
