BRENT PENNINGTON A Spotted Sandpiper searches for a meal at Fords Pond on the morning of 21 April 2013.

Been a while since I’ve seen one of these guys. Meet the Spotted Sandpiper, another uncommon visitor to our region. Fords Pond seems to attract them from time to time, since the last one stopped over here also.

They’re cute little birds but are usually skittish, like most plovers. Close approaches are out of the question. But every now and then you get lucky. Closing from the water makes me seem like much less of a threat.

Except that this turns out to be one of those goofy moments. The Spotted Sandpiper is too busy looking for her next meal to pay much attention to me, and I was too busy shooting to pay attention to where the kayak was going.  Which is why the bow glided into a bank along the shore, jolting me, and startling the Sandpiper, who took flight.

Oh well. I got the photo and no harm was done.
